Mozilla Firefox OS Powered Smartphones Coming in 2013

For years, Mozilla Firefox has been earning itself legions of dedicated users around the world. Savvy computer users have long appreciated the ease of use, as well as many other unique features. For years now, a Mozilla Firefox OS has been talked about. Originally, it carried the name Boot to Gecko and has been in the works (officially) since 2011.

Now, the name has changed but the idea remains the same – an entirely new OS, utilizing pure HTML5 and offering accessible, affordable and easy to use handsets across a broad array of markets.

Mozilla Firefox OS – The Bad

Unless you’re dedicated to Android or Apple, you’ll want to give Mozilla Firefox OS a try. If you happen to live in the UK, however, this might be an issue. So far, plenty of networks have signed on, including Sprint in the US and Telefonica in Spain. However, we’ve yet to see a single UK network sign up.

The release date for the first Mozilla Firefox OS handsets is still a murky “sometime in 2013,” so we’re not too worried just yet. Although it does seem a bit odd, seeing such a massive market completely absent from the listings.

Mozilla Firefox OS – The Good

One thing we’re excited to see is Mozilla’s promise to wipe out layers of unnecessary “middle-ware,” which it says will allow the OS to be available in a wider range of price brackets than anything we’ve seen before. Even the most inexpensive smartphones, it’s rumored, will be available with Mozilla Firefox OS. The brand aims to create something accessible for everybody, and if their promises are true, they’ll do just that.

Everything you already love about a smartphone is said to be included in Mozilla Firefox OS. There are plenty of added bonuses as well. You can cache apps right to your phone. Anybody who’s ever lost their data connection will be in love with this feature right from the get-go. All your web-based apps will be able to access your system files; this is a feature available only through native apps on the most popular systems out there today.

Mozilla Firefox – Our Final Thoughts

We’ll be honest here – we’re not huge fans of Mozilla Firefox, and so we’re not as foaming-at-the-mouth excited about this news as some will be. Although, we admit, their logo is adorable. For current users, obviously, this is something you’ll want to check out. The only part of the Mozilla Firefox OS launch we can say we are really excited about is the plan to make a highly functional smartphone affordable – we love this, and we hope they follow through.

Pre-Alpha Build Firefox OS

If you’re a current user or you’re just looking to try out the latest and (hopefully) greatest, give it a shot. If the prices are truly as low as they’re speculated to be, you won’t be out a huge chunk of change even if you end up hating the OS, hating the handset and buying a replacement the next week.
